How to approach returning to work at the start of the year?

At the start of the year, it is important to set goals of all kinds, for both personal and professional life. To make a productive and healthy return to work, the FNQLHSSC human resources team is offering some tips and tricks.

Occupational health

Occupational health encompasses all the elements promoting health and wellness at work. Certain elements, such as a healthy lifestyle (diet, sleep, etc.) and work routine, have several benefits: control of body and mind, better appreciation for time spent at work, and increased confidence in our professional and social abilities.

Additionally, another concept that is increasingly discussed as part of occupational health discourse is digital wellness. This approach consists of rethinking our relationships with technologies and taking back control of how we use them. Compared to hyperconnectivity, the idea behind the concept of digital wellness is to be aware of the effects of digital technology and to use it intelligently. A few simple gestures such as planning a time slot to check your messages, respecting your moments of uninterrupted reflection (personal work), managing your notifications, and enjoying moments of disconnection (breaks) can radically change your relationship with technologies and increase your wellness.

Healthy and balanced routine

Integrating a routine and methodology into your work schedule can make it easier to return to work after a vacation period. Many elements foster a pleasant adaptation to a routine, particularly the addition of a little pleasure to the agenda: snacks, beverages, music, and so on. A routine can also be a daily or weekly action that helps accomplish tasks: reading emails every day at the same time, reserving a time slot to complete a recurring task, etc. A routine allows you to adopt habits that will make work easier in the long term. It is normal during the first few days to not feel at the top of our energy and productivity levels. Take the time to readjust.

Adopting a routine at work allows you to:

  • Reduce stress.
  • Be better organized.
  • Better manage your time.
  • Achieve goals faster.
  • Increase motivation.
  • Increase productivity.
  • Prioritize projects or tasks more easily.
  • And more!

Importance of disconnecting

Disconnecting from work is an effective way to increase wellness at work. Taking breaks is important for your mental and physical health. Breaks allow you to clear your mind and recharge your batteries. Whether it’s having a coffee with colleagues in the lunchroom, going for a walk, reading a book, or even taking a nap, setting work aside during times of rest is vital. Disconnecting also refers to the importance of leaving tasks at work and not bringing them home with you. Turning off notifications (emails and messages) after your shift or during your days off allows you to have a healthier family and social life, accomplish your personal goals and enjoy life more. You have the right to your personal time, like any individual, without being disturbed by work.
