Wendake, February 25, 2025 – The First Nations of Quebec and Labrador Health and Social Services Commission (FNQLHSSC) would like to warmly congratulate Francis Verreault-Paul for being elected as the Chief of the Assembly of First Nations Quebec-Labrador (AFNQL).
The election, which was held at Entourage sur-le-Lac Resort in Lac-Beauport, demonstrated the commitment and determination of the four candidates in the running, each with a strong vision for the future of First Nations.
“This election marks a new era of continuity, hope and change for First Nations in Quebec. Our wellness depends on strong and committed leadership who listens to the needs of our peoples. The FNQLHSSC looks forward to collaborating with the new Chief to pursue our collective work to ensure that health and social services are more accessible and respectful of our cultural realities,” said Derek Montour, President of the FNQLHSSC Board of Directors.
“This new chapter for the AFNQL constitutes a valuable and essential opportunity to strengthen the autonomy and self-determination of our Nations and to accelerate the implementation of essential actions for everyone’s wellness. As a regional organization, we reaffirm our commitment to working closely with the new Chief and providing our support and guidance with a view to contributing to improving the health and wellness of Quebec First Nations. Rights advocacy, access to culturally safe and respectful services, and the promotion of local initiatives remain at the heart of our priorities,” said Marjolaine Siouï, Executive Director of the FNQLHSSC.
On the occasion of this remarkable milestone, we salute with respect and gratitude the 33 years of commitment of Chief Ghislain Picard, whose leadership, determination and humility have profoundly marked the First Nations as well as dialogue with government bodies and civil society partners. His unwavering dedication to defending the rights and interests of Indigenous peoples continues to inspire and pave the way for a more just and inclusive future.
We applaud the commitment of the other candidates and their contributions to this democratic process that reflects the political vitality and strength of the First Nations in Quebec-Labrador.
