Aging is a natural part of life. Staying physically active as the years go by is a great way to optimize your energy levels, independence and health for as long as possible. As the elders in our community, you are our healers, our teachers, our guides and the bearers of our traditions, and it is important that you take care of yourselves.
Here are a few of the benefits of keeping up an active lifestyle as you age
- Stay physically and mentally fit.
- Minimize arthritis-related and other aches, pains and stiffness.
- Boost your energy and self-sufficiency.
- Enhance your muscle strength for day-to-day activities.
- Maintain mobility and strengthen bones.
- Improve balance and reduce the risk of falls.
- Prevent chronic illness and inhibit the progression of existing health conditions.
How can you be more active?
Move more during the day, however and whenever you can, and vary the type and intensity of your activities.
Include activities specifically designed to target and strengthen your muscles.
Limit your screen time (e.g., mobile device or television).
When sitting for long periods of time, take quick standing or walking breaks to get your blood flowing.
Take part in activities that help with your balance, including traditional dance, snowshoeing, skating, walks in the bush and exercises that improve your flexibility and mobility, like stretching, yoga and even some household chores.
Connect with nature and get some fresh air by going hunting, fishing or harvesting, depending on the season.
It’s never too late to start being active! Just find something you like and, remember, every step toward a more active lifestyle is good for your health and your wellness.
