Tciman project: Promoting a healthy and active lifestyle among young people

During the summer, the community of Opitciwan set up canoe trips on the territory with different groups of young people from the community. This project was carried out in part thanks to the financial agreement of the FNQLHSSC with the Sport Canada branch of the Department of Canadian Heritage as part of the Sport for Social Development in Indigenous Communities — Sport Support Program.

This initiative aimed, among other things, to promote a healthy and active lifestyle among young people aged 12 to 17 years through traditional Atikamekw activities. During these seven-day expeditions, participants were able to experience a cultural immersion allowing them to strengthen their identity and develop their social skills. Canoe, camping, fishing, hunting, gathering, traditional cuisine, tales and legends and talking circles were all part of the program.

The project also aimed to prevent substance abuse among young people during the summer, in addition to allowing them to be active and improve their physical and mental health. Workshops focused on raising awareness regarding video game addiction were offered.

In total, more than twenty people from the community took part in the organization of this activity and 40 young people participated in these expeditions.

In conclusion, the FNQLHSSC would like to congratulate the community of Opitciwan for its commitment and dedication to young people!
